Fast cash for first-time home buyers

22-year-old Laura Gainey of Clearwater is trying to buy her first home. But she quickly learned the home buying process is full of road blocks.

“About ten months ago I tried to apply for a loan and I got denied because of something on my credit and I didn’t have enough money saved up,” Gainey says.

But now, Gainey might be able to get some help with that down payment. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development wants to turn the first-time home buyer tax credit into an $8,000 loan. People, like Gainey, could tap into the cash at signing.
