Housing program gives Griffin chance at new life

Palestine resident Paire Lee Griffin has many reasons to be thankful.

Thanks to a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development housing program, Griffin is moving from a 100-year-old house with no running water or bathroom facilities to a new home on her property this weekend.

“The Lord has blessed me. I’m thankful for all who carried me through the storm and the rain. Thank you, Jesus,” Griffin, 73, said Thursday when USDA Rural Development officials were on hand to present her with a key to her new home on FM 315 in Anderson County.

Relatives and members of her church, New Chapel Baptist Church, also were on hand, blessing her new home.

The event was part of a USDA Rural Development National Homeownership Month celebration.

National Homeownership Month is observed each June to raise awareness about the vital role homeownership plays in improving lives, creating jobs and economic opportunities, and strengthening America’s neighborhoods.
