President Barack Obama’s Making Home Affordable loan-modification program would pay mortgage companies to renegotiate the loans of homeowners in financial trouble, helping more people stay in their houses in the meltdown.

But the federal government’s new $50 billion program is anything but simple.

Ahwatukee lawyer Melanie Beauchamp said she has received one to five calls a day from desperate homeowners since she boned up on the new federal program and recently started advertising to help people navigate the system.
