Obama loan modification program moving slowly
The Treasury Department on Monday said that nearly 910,000 troubled borrowers on the verge of foreclosure have had their mortgages permanently modified to lower payments as part of a White House program — far short of the original goal.
The program, known as the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) helps struggling homeowners by allowing them to reduce monthly loan payments. Under this plan, the lender voluntarily lowers the interest rate, and the government provides subsidies to the lender.
