Taking the credit

Josiah Booth, a 20-year-old woodworker and real estate student, will close on his first home this week. After weeks of paperwork, he’ll soon share the 1,400-square-foot home in Tulsa with three friends who will help pay his mortgage.

“I’m just tired of paying rent,” he said. “It’s throwing away your money for nothing, when you could do something creative and own a home for less.”

But splitting the deal with others isn’t the only way Booth made the numbers work. Like thousands of others across the country, he’ll get a $8,000 tax credit for taking the leap into homeownership.
